What is The Vegan Diet?

The vegan diet consists of vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, breads, spices, soy, nuts and seeds. The vegan diet excludes all animal products. Vegans do not eat red meat, chicken, fish, or dairy products. Therefore, the vegan diet is a meat free and dairy free diet. Vegans are often considered strict vegetarians because most vegetarians include some animal products in their diet, so there is a marked distinction between the vegan diet and the vegetarian diet. Approximately 1% of the population in the United States adheres to a vegan diet.

Vegan for Ethical Reasons

Some people choose a vegan diet because of ethical reasons. They are ardent defenders of the animal rights movement. These vegans are often concerned with how animals are treated and want to be part of a solution. This kind of vegan not only adheres to the vegan diet but also avoids the use of animal products such as leather or fur.

Vegan for Religious Reasons

Some people choose a vegan diet because of spiritual or religious reasons. Their belief system does not allow them to eat certain foods.

Vegan for Health Reasons

Some people choose a vegan diet because of health reasons. Within this category there are two types of people. There are those who choose a vegan diet because they have experienced health problems and feel the need to live a healthier lifestyle and those who simply want to stay trim and healthy and adopt the vegan diet in order to prevent disease. These vegans believe that eating healthy food is the best medicine.
